Including both blunt and penetrating trauma, renal injuries occur in 0.3-1.2% of all trauma patients, and 15-25% of patients with pelvic fracture incur urologic injury. The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Injury Criteria are used to characterize severity of renal and urologic injury (Tables 54.1, 54.2, 54.3, and 54.4). Repair of injury to the kidney, ureter, urethra, or bladder whenever possible is essential to preserve long-term function.
