This chapter explores what a standard represents, why it is necessary, and the current state of standards in support of digital pathology. The intention is to understand the high-level goals of digital pathology standards and generally how they go about trying to reach those goals. Much work remains to be done, but this is to be expected as the field continues to rapidly evolve. The promise of digital pathology is to enhance patient care through the implementation of computer algorithms augmenting what humans alone are capable of. Standards in digital pathology represent the foundational efforts allowing this potential to be realized.
