Ian wants to manage his money and has schizophrenia: Neuroscience facilitates our understanding of money management
The purpose of this chapter is to explore how Ian, a 25-year-old who wants to manage his money, might be affected by schizophrenia, a condition that changes how the brain perceives the world, other people, and one’s own sensory, cognitive and emotional experiences. People with schizophrenia can have full lives with their daily routines, relationships, work and leisure, but may require modifications for function. The key neuroscience concepts we will explore in this chapter include: characteristics of schizophrenia including positive and negative symptoms and their neuroscience foundations, how schizophrenia manifests in young adulthood, frontal and prefrontal lobe activity, and how drugs affect the brain to create symptoms and side effects.
