Coming Out as LGBTQ+: A Qualitative Study on the Mental Health Impact of Religious Responses to Disclosure.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer (LGBTQ+) individuals may experience judgment, exclusion, and rejection by religious environments. This mixed methods study focused on the impact of religion on sexual orientation disclosure/coming out. Through purposeful snowball sampling we had 429 participants. Three major themes were identified: influence of religion on mental well-being religious separation, and religious affirmation. The impact of religion was a factor in 254 (59.2%) participants in suppressing their sexual orientation. Participants expressed fear, shame, and rejection from religious organizations and their personal exit from religion/church. To improve the mental well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, religious organizations can employ strategies to educate clergy leaders and communities to become welcoming and affirming.
