Motion of the digits is essential to good hand function. When the digits become stiff from any etiology, this can affect the overall function of the hand. While there are multiple causes of the stiff digit, this chapter is intended to provide guidance regarding the treatment of a stiff digit following trauma, primarily with a focus on the metacarpophalangeal (MP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints. A detailed review of anatomy of the joints, the intrinsic muscles, and evaluation of the causes of contractures will be described. Both nonoperative and operative treatment modalities will be reviewed as well as expected outcomes.
