This chapter covers the perioperative risk of anesthesia as it relates to general and specific, organ-based complications in addition to the rapidity with which they are managed. The authors point to evidence that suggests that the choice of anesthetic drugs, ventilator strategies, or technique may have an impact on patient outcomes. The authors conclude that the risks related to anesthesia appear to have decreased over the past several decades.
