Healthcare reforms and achievements
This chapter reviews and analyses the healthcare system of the Republic of Uzbekistan since its independence and the recent reforms and policy initiatives of the government under the new presidency of Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The country implemented several major healthcare reforms in the public and primary healthcare systems. This study tries to illustrate the impact of major healthcare policies and reforms in the country based on statistical data from the State Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan and from nearby districts in Kazakhstan to create a “synthetic Uzbekistan,” which enables us to see the relative achievements. We observe that the country experienced significant improvements in life expectancy for men and a reduction in infant mortality rates. The chapter concludes that Uzbekistan has made significant progress toward improving the healthcare sector in the country, and a further improvement in population health will depend significantly on environmental safety and public health initiatives.
