Value-based care payment models provide an opportunity to curb rising healthcare costs. However, there are limited examples of these models in practice for specialty care, even for common and expensive urologic conditions, such as prostate cancer. As the uptake of focal therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer increases, value-based reimbursement is a potentially critical mechanism to ensure this technology is used appropriately and optimizes outcomes. Understanding the fundamentals of value-based care, its stakeholders, and the governing regulations and policies is essential to begin developing value-based care pathways that successfully integrate focal therapy.
