Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer: A Guide for Patients
In an effort to achieve prostate cancer control and yet minimize damage to surrounding structures, the urological community has been exploring techniques that treat just specific portion(s) of the prostate where prostate cancer is located and actively monitoring the untreated, noncancerous portions of the prostate gland. These approaches are known as “focal therapy.” We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when an appropriate treatment is matched to a suitable patient based on individual circumstances and preferences. This chapter is written as a resource for patients to aid them in making individualized treatment decisions for prostate cancer by explaining the concept of focal therapy including its benefits, possible side effects, and risks.
