In this chapter, we will discuss the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for the real-time identification and characterization of physical phenomena, focused on astrophysics. Given the need for rapid responses to many astrophysical phenomena, the promise of AI techniques to take humans out of the loop and enable automated analyses is changing the way time-domain astronomy is performed. We will briefly discuss a few use cases, including in the optical time domain, astrophysical neutrinos and gravitational waves.
