The orthopaedic care of children with MD is a demanding endeavor. Although many similarities exist, each subtype of MD can present differently. It is imperative that the proper diagnosis be confirmed so that treatment can be initiated based on knowledge of the natural history of the disease. Advancements in the medical management of MD are challenging historic recommendations for orthopaedic care. This chapter provides a brief, general overview of orthopaedic management of the most common childhood muscular dystrophies.
