Hepatic Arterial Infusion Team Site Visit
Regardless of prior expertise, a site visit at an established high-volume center should be considered mandatory for any new hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) team. Such an experience is an invaluable opportunity to leverage the expertise of an established center and form a relationship with experts who can help guide and mentor the new program as it launches and expands. The site visit is also an early step toward establishing a collaborative culture within the new team, and all critical members should learn about patient selection, HAI pump implantation, HAI chemotherapy dosing, and general HAI patient management, key information which is not readily disseminated within the limited literature. The site visit should take place before, but in proximity, to treating the first patient, and should include members from surgery, medical oncology, pharmacy, and nursing, though operating room (OR) staff also benefit from this experience. This chapter details key considerations for the site visit, including preparation for the visit and training that should transpire during the visit.
