HAI-Specific Complications and Management
The invention of the hepatic artery infusion pump (HAIP) has made intra-arterial treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma a generally safe and feasible option for many patients. HAI pumps allow for regional delivery of chemotherapy, and most often provides additional treatment options in cases where liver metastases are unresectable or when systemic chemotherapy is poorly tolerated. While this liver-directed approach provides opportunities for treatments that were not previously available, there are anatomical considerations and potential complications associated with the device, its placement, the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents, and the side effects of those medications themselves. In this chapter we discuss these potential HAI-specific complications and their management.
