Laparoscopic TAPP Repair
Inguinal hernia repair remains one of the most common surgical procedures performed worldwide. There are a variety of repair techniques for the treatment of inguinal hernias, including open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches. In this chapter we will review the indications, technique, and outcomes associated with the laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair. While there is a learning curve associated with the TAPP approach, both short- and long-term outcomes have been very favorable including low recurrence and chronic pain rates and rapid postoperative recovery. It is also an ideal approach for certain situations including bilateral inguinal hernias and recurrent hernias following previous open anterior repair. The TAPP approach is an excellent repair option for a surgeon to have in her/his armamentarium and it will be thoroughly reviewed in this chapter.
