This chapter addresses the basic techniques involved in implanting an intrathecal drug delivery system. In particular, intra-operative care aspects are discussed including anesthetic considerations, patient positioning, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis, surgical technique, and perioperative care. While the text offers valuable tips, the authors recognize that variations in surgical techniques and preferences exist and other approaches may be appropriate depending on patient condition and surgeon preferences.
