Plantar fasciitis is a painful and debilitating disease that accounts for 80% of patients with heel pain. As a degenerative process that involves the plantar fascia, it often results from chronic overuse and repetitive trauma. The diagnosis is typically based on history and physical exam and less frequently requires further imaging/testing. The majority of patients respond to nonoperative treatments, such as stretching exercises and night-time splinting. Severe disease processes that do not respond to nonoperative treatments may require surgical intervention, including plantar fascia releases and gastrocnemius recession.
