The global population is aging rapidly with people living longer, more active lives. As a result, we are seeing growth in the field of geriatric trauma, with increasing numbers of significant multi-system injuries. Although many principles are similar between the older and younger adult trauma patients, the elderly patient has diminished physiologic reserves and is much less able to tolerate injury. These patients often have significant comorbidities that require a more aggressive approach to triage and management in order to obtain a successful outcome.
