Good Evaluation - Better Digital Health
With the advent of powerful digital systems, particularly those making use of AI technology, the need for evaluation has become more important than ever. The latest AI developments therefore impose a new imperative for biomedical and health informatics to evaluate digital health interventions with multiple determinants and implications, from technical and organisational aspects to human, social, ethical and educational perspectives. This publication presents the proceedings of STC 2025, the 24th Special Topic Conference of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI), held from 20 to 22 October 2025 in Osnabrück, Germany. EFMI STC conferences promote research and development in biomedical and health informatics and are of particular relevance to early career scientists. The theme of the 2025 edition was “Good Evaluation – Better Digital Health”, highlighting the principle that rigorous evaluation is essential to ensure the safety, effectiveness and sustainability of health IT innovations. The conference received 155 submissions of all kinds, 107 of which were full and student papers. After a thorough peer review process, 71 of these were selected for presentation and publication, an acceptance rate of 66%. The work is divided into 9 sections:evaluating AI systems; human and organisational factors; social and political factors; technical factors; ethical issues; evaluation paradigms and techniques; research models, frameworks and theories; education; and other topics. Providing an overview of current trends in the evaluation of digital health and AI enabled care systems, this volume will be of interest to healthcare professionals everywhere.
