Video research methods for learning scientists: State of the art and future directions
The easy availability of affordable, high-quality video technology is providing learning science researchers with increasingly powerful ways of collecting, sharing, studying, and presenting detailed cases of teaching and learning, in both formal and informal educational settings, for both research and teaching purposes. Because video research data accumulates quickly and contains so much detail, researchers need tools and strategies for focusing their work. Our chapter offers research strategies based on previously published guidelines and our own experience. We also discuss frameworks for thinking about instructional uses of video. Finally we consider emerging trends related to video as ‘big data,’ including instrumentation, learning analytics, data management, and ethics. Our goal is to orient designer-researchers who are embarking on the exciting adventure of video research within a rapidly changing technical landscape.
