The name of the genus refers to the characteristic bulbous shape of the head of pilot whales. Two species are recognized. The long-finned pilot whale was first described by T. S. Traill in 1809 as Delphinus melas. In the past, this species had often been referred to as G. melaena, but as noted by Jones et al. (1986) and confirmed by Rice (1998), the correct spelling of the species name is melas. The short-finned pilot whale was described as Globicephala macrorhynchus by the British naturalist J. E. Gray in 1846. Recent synonyms of this species include G. sieboldii and G. scammonii (Van Bree, 1976). A full list of synonyms for both species can be found in Van Bree (1971).
