The Coase theorem evolved from Ronald Coase's classic 1960 article, “The Problem of Social Cost,” and is one of the most controversial propositions in modern economics, with an impact stretching across economics, law, and sundry other fields. This entry presents a brief overview of the theorem and also discusses its relationship to the transaction-cost-based theory of the firm, first elucidated in Coase's 1937 article, “The nature of the firm.”
