Lower genital tract masses and malignancies
Benign and malignant masses of the lower genital tract pose unique diagnostic and management challenges in pediatric and adolescent populations. Emphasis on accurate diagnosis is key in differentiating gynecologic from nongynecologic etiologies and in ensuring appropriate treatment selection. The differential diagnosis of masses of the lower genital tract is discussed, highlighting the importance of considering rare malignancies like sarcoma botryoides. Surgical management may consist of biopsy or excision. Visualization, documentation, biopsy/excision, and hemostasis plans should be developed flexibly, as intraoperative findings may change the required approach. Multidisciplinary care is of paramount importance to avoid diagnostic delays and ensure appropriate long-term management.
