This paper considers how one demarcates some domain of inquiry – a task often taken for granted. Taking inspiration from modeling practices in economics where equilibrium reasoning figures as central, I outline a conceptual framework for characterizing such a domain. This framework, which emphasizes the utility of the equilibrium concept, pulls together two sets of insights coming from Herbert Simon’s (1962) notion of near-decomposability and the contemporary literature on multi-scale modeling.
