Building Our Finance Muscle: A Hybrid Educational Intervention to Improve Nurse Leaders’ Competence and Confidence in the Boardroom
To describe the outcomes of an education series on the self-reported financial acumen of nurse leaders. Nurse leaders are pivotal to an organization's financial success. However, opportunities for education are often inaccessible. As nurse leaders’ experience is decreasing, the need for improved financial acumen is expedited. As pressure rises to meet strict financial goals, leaders must be prepared to balance the cost of delivering care while achieving high quality of care. We used a pre-post design including 3 independent convenience cohorts to implement Inspire Nurse Leaders’ Healthcare Leaders’ Guide to Financial Acumen, a 3-course series, to improve the self-reported financial acumen of leaders using the American Organization of Nursing Leadership Online Competencies - Individual Self-Assessment. Of 145 participants, 24.8% (n = 36) completed the preassessment and postassessment. Of those, the self-assessed American Organization of Nursing Leadership Nurse Leader Competencies improved significantly across all 11 competencies. Implementing a comprehensive, organization-specific educational series may improve the financial acumen of nurse leaders.
