Providing care for older patients in increasingly complex health care systems necessitates models of care that incorporate assessment of function, cognition, and symptom burden into treatment decision making. Not only does the potential impact of aging on disease presentation influence treatment strategy, an older adult’s support network and level of function also inform how caregivers and transitions impact medical outcomes. Dissemination of geriatrics principles related to excellence in interprofessional practice may influence the safety of health care systems for everyone. Future directions of geriatrics include an increased role of geroscience guided therapies that may mitigate vulnerability to disease.
