The clinical characteristics and physiologic changes of older adults and the principles of delivering good care for older adults should serve as the foundation for providing optimal primary care for older patients. Our approach to the older patient starts with a careful clinical assessment to identify correctable or manageable acute or chronic medical problems and geriatric syndromes. Next, the management of chronic problems is conducted in the context of the patient’s goals of care, always assessing the risk versus benefit of therapy. Finally, we maintain an emphasis toward restoring and maintaining the older adult’s function and independence.
