Notes on the marine algae of the Bermudas. 4. Additions to the flora, including Polysiphonia plectocarpa sp. nov.
Eight additional species of marine algae are reported from Bermuda for the first time: Ulvella lens P. Crouan et H. Crouan; three epiphytic species of Audouinella (A. daviesii (Dillwyn) Woelkerling, A. hormorhiza (Borgesen) Garbary, and A. hoytii (Collins) C.W. Schneider); Gloiocladia atlantica (Searles) R.E. Norris; Corallophila verongiae (D.L. Ballantine et M.J. Wynne) R.E. Norris; Chondria platyramea A.B. Joly et Ugadim in A.B. Joly, Cordeiro-Marino, Yamaguishi-Tomita, et Ugadim; and Polysiphonia plectocarpa C.W. Schneider sp. nov. in C.W. Schneider et Searles. The new species is similar in vegetative characteristics to P. delicatula Hollenberg from the Indo-Pacific but distinct in its reproductive features, particularly in the nature of the pericarps. One species of Audouinella not collected in Bermuda since the last century, A. secundata (Lyngbye) P.S. Dixon in Parke et P.S. Dixon, has been re-collected, and other species in the genus previously known for the islands and collected again in this study are listed.
