We have studied the pair creation rate in a cylindrical region of space with a homogeneous electric field parallel to the cylinder axis. MIT boundary conditions on the surface of the cylinder are imposed. The wave functions of the created particles are calculated. In the limit of the cylinder radius tending towards infinity, the Schwinger formula is reproduced. Finally, the fraction of produced strange particles is studied as a function of the cylinder radius. © 1990.
