The influence of rotational coupling on K-vacancy formation in U-Pb collisions

The probability for 2p1/2σ-ionization in U-U and Pb-Pb collisions is calculated. The results are used to explain the measured impact parameter dependence for K-vacancy production in U-Pb collisions as the sum of direct ionization and strong rotational and radial coupling between the substates of the quasimolecular L-shell. © 1978 Springer-Verlag.
