Hydrogen adsorption and cohesive energy of single-walled carbon nanotubes
The capacity of single-walled carbon nanotubes for hydrogen sorption of 5-10 wt% at 1 bar near room temperature was investigated. A purified sample of SWNTs were cut and their robe structure was disrupted by sonication, and the modified SWNT was extracted by vacuum filtration using a ceramic filter. Desorption and adsorption isotherm measurements showed that with SWNTs, hydrogen will adsorb and desorb over a narrow change of pressure, so storage systems can be designed to operate without wide pressure excursions. Adsorption on crystalline ropes exceeded 8 wt%. Hydrogen first adsorbs to the ropes' outer surfaces, then, upon separation of the individual SWNTs at pressures higher than 40 bar at 80 K, the gas physisorbs to the exposed surfaces.
