The use of silicone oil in the management of intractable retinal detachment associated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy is increasing. Based on clinical experience in over 240 cases, the authors describe their current surgical techniques involving silicone oil, as well as the avoidance and management of associated intraoperative complications.
