The motion of a moored semi-submersible is modelled using a semi-empirical nonlinear ordinary differential equation. Time domain simulations, guided by the qualitative theory of dynamical systems, illustrate the extremely complex nature of typical responses in regular seas. The importance of nonlinearities is emphasised together with the implications for floating structures in general. © 1988.
