Effects of the Poisson ratio and negative thrust on the dynamic stability of a free plate subjected to a follower force
The macroscopic Poisson ratio of a large plate-like truss structure may vary due to the geometry of the truss. Studied are the effects of the Poisson ratio and negative thrust on the dynamic stability of a flexible rectangular plate which has four free edges. One of the four edges is subjected to a tangential follower thrust. The model is simplified to a continuous isotropic plate, and is investigated by means of modal analysis. A change in Poisson ratio sometimes reduces the flutter load drastically. The drastic reduction comes from the existence of a weak flutter instability. It is also shown that there may exist both flutter and divergence, even for negative thrust, and that the tensile divergence load is smaller than the compressive one. © 1989.
