Methods for investigating flutter are reviewed emphasizing nonlinear aspects of problem; thin plate or shell is immersed in fluid stream with parallel fluid flow over one side of structure; primary concern is with final state of growing disturbance; flat plate as prototype of more general flutter problem is discussed in detail; curved plate and cylindrical shell are then considered, with considerable discussion devoted to experiment in order to indicate areas of needed theoretical developments; possible fruitful lines of future research are indicated.
