A component mode analysis is carried out based upon the use of constraint conditions and Lagrange multipliers. It is used to generalize the well known results for a single-degree-of-freedom dry friction damper to a multi-mode linear system with a spring-mass-dry friction damper attached. The dry friction damper law (Coulomb damping) is approximated by its first harmonic. © 1983.
