The 3-D, steady and pulsatile velocity fields and the corresponding endothelial shear stress fields that are created by a flow applicator in an organ support system have been calculated on a Cray Y-MP8/864 supercomputer using Version 4.2.3 of FLUENT, a commercial CFD code. These calculations have been validated experimentally in a scaled up physical model of the flow applicator using laser Doppler velocimetry to measure the velocity fields. The measured and calculated velocity components agree closely, thereby supporting the validity of the flow field computations and the predicted endothelial shear stress distributions.
