An additional modification is presented that allows velocity components to be measured in any direction in the plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the system. This is done by revolving the axis of the diffraction grating about the laser beam. The diffraction grating is mounted on a pillar that can be rotated through ±90° about an axis coincident with that of the laser beam and can be clamped at any selected angle. The laser beam passes through the center of an axial tube near the base of the pillar. This technique has been used to measure velocities near the walls of casts of human arteries in steady and periodic pulsatile flow
