A laser interferrometric technique has been used to follow the concentration difference across a membrane separating two fluid chambers. A constant pressure head is maintained across the membrane. The fluid volume in one chamber is monitored by measuring the position of the meniscus in a calibrated capillary tube. By introducing these quantities in the equations of volume and solute fluxes across the membrane reflection coefficient, hydraulic conductivity and effective membrane permeability are obtained from a single experiment. Constructional details of the apparatus used for the experiment are described. The application of the technique to the study of transport of sucrose across the Cuprophan membrane at 37°C is presented
