A variational procedure due to Husimi (1940) is applied to the many-boson problem in an effort to find an approximate density matrix. The results are identical to those previously obtained by Wentzel (1960) employing another technique. It differs primarily from his work in that it is not limited to Hamiltonians of any specific form.
