Although the existence of a genetic predisposition in the etiology of schizophrenia is well established, little is known concerning environmental factors which contribute to schizophrenic breakdown. In this review the etiological significance of pregnancy and birth complications is considered, with special emphasis on the interactive roles of genetics and environmental insult. © 1981.
