An epidemiologic dilemma exists in the study of the prevalence of depression in late life. Though depressive symptoms are frequent, the diagnosis of major depression in both community and clinical populations is relatively rare. Minor depression, a subsyndromal phenomena, appears to be clinically significant yet produces a clear diagnostic dilemma for the clinician. The evidence for minor depression is presented in this article.
