A pipe-beam is clamped at its upper end, and free at its lower end. Two permanent magnets are placed to the right and left of the free end of the pipe-beam. The system may exhibit chaotic oscillations both for free and forced vibration when fluid passes through the pipe. Chaotic behavior due to a flutter instability or forced response is studied in a theoretical and experimental investigation. Special attention is given to the effect of higher modes. © 1988 Academic Press Limited.
