Renal adenoma has traditionally been described as a solid renal mass less than 3 cm in diameter with a low or absent propensity to metastasize. Histologically, some authorities feel it is distinct from while others feel it represents a variant of renal cell carcinoma. Diagnosing renal adenoma clinically is hazardous, and a surgical and histological diagnosis of the entire lesion is mandatory in the vast majority of cases. Treatment depends on the lesion, its location and the status of the kidneys and the patient, but renal sparing surgery is favored if the histology confirms adenoma.
