Case 44-1976: Recurrent Venous Thrombosis and Hepatic Enlargement

Presentation of Case A 66-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of mental deterioration. She was described as “emotionally unstable” but was physically well until seven months previously, when she began to have episodic belching with bouts of severe pain in the right upper abdominal quadrant that followed the ingestion of rich foods and were relieved by vomiting. Three months before admission pain and swelling in the right calf developed, and she entered another hospital. A diagnosis of thrombophlebitis was made, and heparin and warfarin were administered.
