The authors have designed and performed simulations of a synthetic receive aperture system (SRA) which can be used to address a large number of phased array channels with a relatively small number of parallel receive channels in the formation of high-resolution ultrasonic breast images. They have measured two-dimensional phase aberration profiles in several locations across the breasts of 11 female volunteers. When compared to a full synthetic aperture (SA) system, SRA is much simpler in terms of the digital memory and computations required. For SRA, the steering and focusing delays are applied while the data is acquired, so that minimal post-acquisition processing is required.
