A computer configuration design problem is considered. The computer system is modelled as a closed queueing network. The average response time to an interactive user request is minimized and the speeds of the devices are the decision variables. A broad class of nonlinear cost functions is considered. In several special cases, any local minimum of the optimization problem is shown to be its global minimum. Numerical examples demonstrating the usefulness of the model are presented, together with a sensitivity study.
