Design requirements of systems used in life-critical applications result in the specification of extremely high levels of reliability. A case in point is the digital flight control system to be used in the future generation of aircraft. Traditional reliability validation approaches, consisting of lifetesting techniques, are inapplicable for such systems. A framework for addressing this important problem is proposed.
