In a multinational survey of psychopathological symptoms in 768 chronic hospitalized schizophrenic patients an approximately equal representation of positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia was revealed. This is at variance with the common contention that there is a prevalence of negative symptoms in chronic schizophrenia and especially in chronic hospitalized patients suffering from schizophrenia. Since patients were adequately treated with neuroleptics, these findings have brought to attention that neuroleptics might be less efficacious in the control of a positive symptoms than one would like to believe.
