OFfline analyses have shown the Fan algorithm to be an effective method for adaptive sampling of cardiac signals. The feasibility of implementing the Fan in real-time has been evaluated. A prototype has been constructed using the TMS32010 signal processor. The prototype indicates that an elemental Fan sampler can be built for a cost of less than 100 for components, excluding the analog-to-digital converter (ADC). With such a device, digital cardiac samples can be selected adaptively in real time to obtain higher quality measurements than are possible with uniform sampling at the same average rates.
