The basic framework for investigating global change and its implcations for life on earth are presented. The first three chapters introduce and review the fundamentals: basic chemical concepts, relevant features of the earth system and the key physical, biological and chemical processes involved. The fourth chapter reviews the mathematical formalism used to represent biogeochemical cycles. Towards the end of this chapter BOXES, the computer program included, provides a user-friendly method for constructing numerical models of biogeochemical cycles. Chapters five, six, seven and eight contain discussions on the global cycles of phosphorus, carbon, sulphur and nitrogen respectively, with the aid of BOXES. The final chapter integrates all of these cycles, to investigate the stability of atmospheric oxygen.
